Keeping up appearances - Prestige

Sometimes I wonder why people choose to stay in a situation which is clearly far from ideal. What is this need to furfill the expectations of the outside world, the hunger for their acceptances, their admiration. Why is this more important than our inner happiness? Why do we choose to stay in this cage?
